WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY
RESTORING THE BODY'S NATURAL MECHANICS
Osteopathy
Osteopathy is founded on the principle that the body possesses an innate ability to heal itself when its structure and function are in harmony.
The Osteopathic belief is that a practitioner’s role is not as one of curing disease, but of restoring the body’s natural mechanics so that it could heal through its own inherent wisdom. Our Osteopathic perspective is a holistic, hands-on approach to healthcare that focuses on diagnosing, treating, management and support.
At Tide we acknowledge the interrelationship between the body’s structure and function. Through the use of manual techniques we aim to improve your mobility, reduce your pain, and enhance your overall well-being.
You don’t need a referral to see an Osteopath. You can claim Osteopathic treatment on your private health insurance extras, and we also accept Medicare care plans and DVA patients. Osteopaths treat all ages, from babies to older adults.
Osteopaths can address conditions & physiological processes such as:
- Headaches, migraines, sinus presentations
- Acute and chronic neck, back, hip, knee and ankle pain
- Joint pain & stiffness
- Sports injuries
- Rehabilitation management
- Pregnancies
- Postural imbalances
Osteopathic Techniques
At Tide Osteo, we use a mix of direct and indirect osteopathic techniques that are tailored to your body’s needs.
Whether you’re seeking relief from pain, improved mobility, or overall body balance, we have the expertise to create a treatment plan just for you.
Below are some of the many different techniques we have to support you and your body to feel and move better.
01
Soft Tissue Technique (STT)
A hands-on method that involves rhythmic stretching, deep pressure, and traction to relax hypertonic muscles, improve circulation, and release myofascial tension.
02
Muscle Energy Technique (MET)
An active technique where the patient gently contracts their muscles against the osteopath’s resistance to improve joint mobility, lengthen shortened muscles, and restore normal tone.
03
High Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) Manipulation
A precise, quick thrust applied to a restricted joint (often producing a “click”) to restore normal movement and function. Commonly used on the spine and peripheral joints.
04
Balanced Ligamentous Tension (BLT)
A gentle, indirect technique where the osteopath positions a joint or tissue to balance ligament tension, allowing the body’s natural forces to correct dysfunction.
05
Counterstrain / Strain-Counterstrain
A passive, positional release method where the osteopath places the body in a position of comfort to relieve muscle spasm and reset neuromuscular control.
06
Myofascial Release (MFR)
Focused on the fascia (connective tissue), this technique applies gentle, sustained pressure to release restrictions and improve tissue glide and flexibility.
07
Cranial Osteopathy (Craniosacral Therapy)
A subtle and deeply relaxing approach that works with the rhythmic motion of cerebrospinal fluid and cranial bones to restore balance and reduce tension throughout the body.
08
Functional Technique
The osteopath guides a joint or tissue through a range of motion to find ease and fluidity, allowing the body to self-correct with minimal force.
09
Lymphatic Drainage Technique
Encourages fluid movement through the lymphatic system to reduce swelling, support immune function, and enhance detoxification.
10
Myofascial Release (MFR)
Focused on the fascia (connective tissue), this technique applies gentle, sustained pressure to release restrictions and improve tissue glide and flexibility.
11
Articulation / Joint Mobilisation
Slow, repetitive movements through the normal range of a joint to improve mobility, circulation, and synovial fluid exchange.
12
Inhibition Technique
Sustained, gentle pressure applied to hypertonic muscles or trigger points to reduce tension and pain.
Additional Therapies
At Tide, both our Osteopaths are trained in:

Dry Needling
This targeted technique focuses on relieving tight muscles and trigger points, offering both pain relief and enhanced mobility. It stimulates the body’s natural healing processes, helping to reduce muscle tension and improve overall function.

Cupping
By applying suction cups to the skin, cupping increases blood flow, reduces inflammation, and helps relax muscles. This technique can also leave temporary marks on the skin, which are a normal part of the healing process and fade within a few days.
